A little Background about Andrew Jones

I was born in Houston, Texas on December 27, 1960, and I grew up fishing but mostly in the nearby freshwater lakes for crappie. We did go shrimping in Trinity Bay quite often as I was growing up, so the salt environment wasn’t anything new. I always knew the coast is where my heart is.

When I was 10 years old, I went on my first surf fishing trip near San Luis Pass located on the West end of Galveston Island. On that trip, I caught a 9 lb. redfish and a 20 lb. Jack Crevalle, which steadily walked me toward the water until my dad stopped it by letting the rod rest on his hand. To me, these were big fish and it was much more exciting than catching crappie from the area lakes.

In the years immediately following that memorable trip, I went surf fishing only a few times. I spent the next few years rodeoing, and after realizing I wasn’t going to make a living at it, I took up surf fishing as my main hobby.

Since then, I have learned very much and have tuned my skills at catching quality fish from the surf, piers, and jetties of the Texas Upper Coast. I particularly have an interest in pursuing unusual catches. Some of my accomplishments have been three nice ling in one day from the Surfside Jetty with the largest one estimated at weighing 70 lbs., a 6’ 6” tiger shark from the Flagship Fishing Pier in Galveston, and an approximate 250 lb. Stingray, which may have been a Texas State record, caught from the Texas surf.

I am now married with a lovely wife (Lisa) and a precious son (Luke). To this day, I still live in Houston but I hope to move closer to the coast in the future. And presently, I work as Associate Professor and Lead Instructor of (CNC) Computer Numerical Control Machining Technology at North Harris College.

To conclude, I have learned a great amount about land-based saltwater fishing, but I continue to learn something new each time I go fishing and read this fabulous message board. The best teachers are the best learners. And furthermore, I love to fish, teach, and write and Surf-Masters.com has given me the opportunity to combine these into one - Thanks!
